IPL 2018 has been horrendous for Delhi Daredevils so far. The leader of this team Gautam Gambhir hasn’t looked good not only as a player but also as an opener. He has time and again failed to give a good start to his team which has led to the downfall in Delhi’s batting. Forget about leading a team by an example, it is sorrowful to see that he has been unable to play even a supporting role. Before the auction, Gautam Gambhir was very keen to end his IPL career leading the side this season and DD was also looking for a capable leader. Gautam Gambhir has been a successful IPL captain in previous editions. Why would Delhi go with any other player for captain when Gautam Gambhir was just in their reach. The likely combination of Delhi Daredevils and Gautam Gambhir, the captain looked impeccable. So, Delhi went with Gautam Gambhir in the auction.
But, did Delhi go for Gautam Gambhir for a solid top order batsman in the auction? Or did they compromise a top order batsman for arguably the best captain in IPL? Though his performance with the bat has been worrisome, he has still shown some masterstroke with his captaincy. But, it wasn’t meant to be enough for his team. Excluding his performance in the first match, he has just managed to score 30 runs with the meager strike rate of 65 from 4 games so far. In fact, this performance from their captain, as well as an opener, who is meant to give a solid start, is just not acceptable. On the other side, overseas players like Colin Munro and Jason Roy, who would be fit for only in the opening combination, aren’t getting enough chances. If both of them are to get the opportunity at the same time as openers, it would mean Gautam Gambhir to either play at 3 or drop himself from the team.
For someone having the stature like that of Gautam Gambhir, it’s unimaginable to think he would consider giving up from captaincy given his grit and determination. But, from the realistic point of view, there was no other way out. Either he had to put up performances with bat, or another player had to get chance before it’s too late. One can only appreciate Gautam Gambhir with his decision to drop himself because of his poor performances. It signifies how much of a team person he was and he has always been. It will always be remembered for this decision.
Two-time IPL winning captain Gautam Gambhir has probably already played his last IPL game. It would hard for anyone to imagine him playing as a player when he has already given up captaincy.
What goods does it bring?
However, this decision can bring some good fortunes to Delhi Daredevils team. It means younger guys will get the chance to play. Young guns like Prithvi Shaw, who showed some good glimpses in his first match will be in playing XI. It is also the best opportunity for the new young captain of Delhi Daredevils to showcase his leadership skills. It can pave a long and smooth path in his way of captaining the national team. Maybe, Delhi Daredevils can start fresh with a new captain and turn things around.
Thank you Gautam Gambhir for your contributions to the game. You will be always remembered.
